There is a commercial on the radio right now that I cringe every time I hear it. It's for a service that will connect you with a person that can do home improvements or repairs. The 'Father' in the ad says, "I know how to do a lot of things. But, now that I am a dad I don't want to spend my Saturday replacing a toilet." That is such a sad statement. This father could be teaching his children how to be resourceful as they watch their father utilize his talents. To take it a step further, as the child ages, this father could SHOW his child how to obtain the skill. I remember reading an article about a dad who was so excited to share with his son the afternoon of using a rented caterpillar to dig their back yard in preparation of a pool. To go even further back, our next door neighbor was installing a pool. He told his children, and the neighborhood children, that if they wanted to swim in it, they had to help dig the hole for it. My two younger brothers and the youngest son of the family next door were in that back yard digging every single day that they could. I only made it a couple of days of digging, but I helped dig! The first ones in that pool I do believe were my brothers and the youngest son of the family...and they were in that pool as often as the could! Why are we no longer wanting to teach children how to do chores around the house and yard; or repairs? Why is this something that is no longer seen as a part of raising our children, but instead something that is for someone else to do. By the way...the caterpillar father...a millionaire who could have easily hired someone to do the entire back yard project. Let's step up and have the courage to teach our children work, chores, and respect for the satisfaction in being self-sufficient.
