We went through a museum today. It was filled with items from the 1800's. Hand sewn dresses that were so beautiful, and have withstood time. Intricate beadwork carefully crafted on clothes, jewelry, or collars. Such talents and patience that have been passed down through generations. But the toys really caught my attention. Dolls made from fabric and batting, with heads carved, sewn, or painted. I picture parents, in secret, carving the avocado seed into a face and attaching it to the fabric body to be lovingly placed under the tree for Christmas morning. Or, a child anxiously wanting to help and learn as their new doll is taking shape. What an amazing creative mind to fashion the doll faces from whatever was available! Avocado seed. Felt. Cotton and muslin. Clay. Apples. Potatoes. Literally, whatever they had, they used. The doll clothes were left over rags from an article of clothing that was made or scraps from worn out clothing. Courage to step into the past and gain a skill! Sit quietly, with no ear phones, no electronics. Just create. As one who has sewn clothes, done cross-stitch and embroidery, I can attest to the joy of the finished item. Even if you just learn how to mend a seam or sew on a button--it will give you a sense of accomplishment. There is no excuse in today's world, there are YouTube videos on almost anything you would want to learn how to do...or, contact a friend or relative that does know how to do the skill you want to learn. If you are the one that has the skill, seek out others and offer to teach them. We need, not just the skill itself, but we need the feeling of accomplishment and the quiet time in today's hectic world.
